Disability Special Interest Group Annual Conference 2019

The Disability SIG recently held their annual conference. The theme of the conference was “Journey to de-congregation-where are we now?”

There was a wide variety of interesting and inspiring speakers on the day. Minister of State for Disabilities Finian Mc Grath  was there to open the conference.  Keynote speakers on the day included:

Christy Lynch The Chair of the Task Force on Personalised Budgets. Christy spoke about the journey towards personalised budgets. Towards Personalised Budgets for People with a Disability in Ireland; Report of the Task Force on Personalised Budgets .  James Cawley from the Independent Living Movement Ireland (ILMI) spoke passionately about the need for more access to personal assistants and the vital role they play in ensuring people with disabilities can lead lives of their choosing. Click here to view more information on  ILMI 

Fionn and Johathan (Fionnathan) spoke about their experience of personalised budgets and running their social enterprise called Fionnathan Productions. Selina Doyle, Practice Development Manager, St Patrick’s Center, Kilkenny & Tara Doheny, Programme Manager, Genio-Transforming Social Services gave a very moving presentation on a collaborative project that supported de-congregation for people with disabilities using services in Kilkenny.  Click here to read more on St Patricks’s Kilkenny . Jessica Gough who is a Leader with Áiseanna Tacaíochta(ÁT) spoke about her experiences of direct payments and the difficulties associated with access support service in other countries.  Click here to see European parliament presentation 

The feedback from attendees was overwhelming positive and hearing about the lived experiences of all keynote speakers was truly inspiring. The Disability SIG would like to thank our Chair Teresa Mallon and all keynote speakers for taking the time to share their experiences, it truly was an inspirational day.
