This introductory workshop offers a practical introduction to the principles of Social Role Valorization. Through a combination of multimedia presentation and small group discussion, participants will learn about the phenomenon of social devaluation. Social Role Valorization is a comprehensive theory which provides insights as to why certain groups of people become devalued in society, the life experiences that are common as a result, valued social roles as a powerful response in combatting these, and key ideas which can guide us in pursuing valued social roles for the people we support. Many participants experience the learning within this event as the most helpful, inspiring, and clarifying body of knowledge they have been exposed to in their professional development, enabling them to focus on being of service to
others in ways that matter. The workshop includes multi-media presentation, small and large group reflection and discussion, and resource
materials.

Social Care Ireland are delighted to be back working on this project with Charlotte Knight; Supported Self-Directed Living (SSDL) Trainer and Consultant and Pamela Mansell (SSDL) Trainer, Executive Coach and Consultant. This introductory course is a recurring event building on demand since 2022, the content continues to address gaps in practice and remains in high demand across a range of roles and services in the social care field. These series of session will delve a little deeper into the concept of social devaluation, wounding, power of roles and the potential to bring about positive change. This series is suitable for any social care practitioner who has no prior knowledge of Social Role Valorisation (SRV) and would like to find out more.

Key concepts:

  • Universal Good Things of Life
  • Why are things so different for those that we support?
  • Common Life Experiences
  • Social Devaluation explained – valued social roles as the antidote
  • Social Roles explained
  • Relationships, power and partnering
  • Principle of Culturally Valued Analogue
  • Stories of discovery and transformation

SRV is a theory of practice that offers a powerful commitment to real-life outcomes for people through the enhancement and establishment of valued social roles. This programme is designed to enhance the competencies of practitioners within services, including frontline workers and those in leadership and change roles.

The training programme will focus on:

  • consciousness raising
  • critical thinking
  • implementation of coherent, best-practice strategies
  • 18 hours Online Teaching, discussion & reflective practice (delivered over 5 sessions)
  • Access to the online learning platform for 12 months

Practitioners who complete this course will join a small but growing community of practice in Ireland of those who find the ideas powerful, challenging, and useful in changing perceptions of disability, and radically improving quality of life outcomes for people who rely on support.
