The aim of the level 1 course is to introduce participants to the basic concepts, principles and strategies of Motivational Interviewing. Level 1 will introduce participants to what motivational interviewing is and supporting people to change their behaviour.

Objectives:

  • Critically review contemporary definitions, processes and evidence based frameworks of brief motivational interventions
  • Demonstrate an understanding of motivational interviewing principles and strategies
  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the process of health behavior change
  • Discuss the application of motivational interviewing principles and basic strategies into practice
  • Utilize selected motivational interviewing strategies and tools in practice exercise

Facilitator Biography:

James O’Shea MA(Supervision), MA, Hdip, BSc, HGdip, RPN, RGN, MACI, MBACP, James is an Accredited Psychotherapist, Addiction Counsellor, Nurse, Clinical Supervisor and Professional Trainer. He has worked in the Irish health and university sectors for nearly thirty years. He became a MINT member in 2003.

James is an experienced trainer delivering training in Motivational Interviewing, Brief Intervention and CBT throughout Ireland for over the past 12 years and is committed to delivering training that is participative, engaging and cognisant of diverse learning styles.

James has a special interest in Health Behaviour Change, Brief Intervention and addictions. He is co-author of the SAOR model of Brief Intervention.
