Non-managerial professional supervision (NMPS) is a facilitated process that focuses on the needs of the reflector.  At the heart of this process lies reflection, and participants are provided with the tools to engage more effectively in reflective practice. The central tool used in NMPS is reflection.

Reflection enables the practitioner (reflector) to examine their practice in a safe, supportive, non-judgemental environment.

On this course, participants are taught how to reflect on and positively challenge their own practice and that of others, with the aim of bringing about positive change and enhancing the quality of services provided to clients.

Why should I study this course?

All health practitioners are expected to be part of a supervision and regulatory process that can clearly show fitness to practice. NMPS is an evidence-based inclusive and sustainable process that has been developed and used in the UK since 2000 and in Ireland since 2005.

NMPS supports the appraisal process, Continuous Professional Development and the clinical governance agenda.

Why is it called non-managerial?

Every practitioner is responsible for their own practice. NMPS is based on the belief that everyone has the potential to reflect on and learn from their own experience, as well as an ability to listen to and support the reflection of others, regardless of grade and length of experience.

Essentially NMPS is complementary to but does not replace managerial supervision.

NMPS cannot work without the support of managers,

What does the training involve?

In NMPS, which is a form of group supervision, participants are trained to assume the roles and responsibilities of reflector, facilitator and observer. Such roles are rotated during each NMPS session to that all participants get an opportunity to reflect on their own practice. NMPS groups are comprised of no more than 4 members.

To prepare individuals for NMPS, this 3 day course covers the following topics and techniques:

  • Reflective Practice: using Learning Styles, Problem Solving & Decision Making.
  • Communication Skills: with a focus on Transactional Analysis, Six Categories of Counselling Intervention, Assertiveness, and Negotiation.
  • Leadership: including Reflector Leadership Styles, Managing Change, Risk Management and Managing Conflict.
  • The model, protocol & method: with particular emphasis on confidentiality, roles and responsibilities of reflector, facilitator and observer
  • Skills Practice Sessions: to reduce the gap between theory and practice.

At the end of the training course, each participant will be allocated to an NMPS group of 4 and will start to practice NMPS immediately following this course.
