Conference title: Social Care Practice and Relationships- Critical Reflections on Relationship-based Practice

In light of the year ahead, with Coru registration finally on the horizon. The theme of the conference explores all the relationships we have within our practice, with each other, our colleagues and the people we support. How do we critically reflect on these relationship- based practices, promote and protect them in a more regulated environment. There will be Keynote Speakers and Workshops/Presentations relating to how, you the Social Care Professional, can improve your relationship-based practice and add to our skills and knowledge.

We are looking for nominations for the Student Award and the Outstanding Contribution Award, the winners will be presented with the award at the conference on the Wednesday 29th March at the gala dinner. The closing date for all applications is Friday 17th February 2023.

Key Note Speaker: Catherine Kelly

Title of keynote: How to implement positive practice change and the Impact of this change on the lives of people with Intellectual Disability

Biography: Catherine Kelly has worked in the community and voluntary sector for over 30 years.
She is the Deputy CEO of WALK an organisation that supports people with intellectual disabilities in Dublin and Louth. She has been at the forefront of designing, developing, and delivering award winning programmes for people with intellectual disabilities that provide pathways to access employment in the open labour market. She has a particular interest in the development of person-centred, socially inclusive supports and in the provision of supports that are driven by an equality and human rights agenda. She is a regular speaker at national conferences and has made significant contributions to policy development that focuses on the empowerment of people with intellectual disabilities. She has been an associate lecturer with the Department of Humanities in TU Dublin for the last 10 years lecturing on the part time and full time Bachelor of Arts in Social Care course. Catherine is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Social Science with Maynooth University and contributes as a writer to RTE Brainstorm.

Key note speaker: Brian Pennie

Title of Keynote: How to Find Your True North: A Guidance System for Life

Biography: Brian Pennie is a former heroin addict turned doctor who’s on a mission to show people that change is possible. Since embracing his second chance at life in 2013, he has become a doctor of neuroscience and psychology, a lecturer at the top two universities in Ireland, an executive coach to some of Ireland’s most influential leaders, and a consultant to some of the world’s largest organisations (Flutter, EY, Davy Group, AIB, and Sanofi). He is also a keynote speaker, best-selling author, founder and CEO of Change is Possible, and has reached millions of people with his online content at www.brianpennie.com

Key note speaker: Dr Louise O’Connor

Title of Keynote: Agile Emotion Practices: Recognising, Valuing and Developing the Centrality of Emotions in Social Care.        

 Biography: Dr Louise O’Connor is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Law and Social Sciences at Royal Holloway, University of London. A registered social worker, Louise began her career in residential work with young people, then worked for 15 years as a social worker with children and families before becoming a lecturer in social work. Her experience working therapeutically and in complex assessment has contributed to a lasting interest in relationship-based practice. Her research interests focus on the practices and processes of social work and social care. She is interested in the ‘doing’ of practice, particularly the roles of emotions, identities and decision-making in everyday organisational practice. Louise teaches in several areas including social work theory, skills, organisational theory, child observation, research methods and risk, assessment and decision-making. Her recent and forthcoming publications are on the topics of emotion practices and decision-making.
