Group Facilitation Training with Sam Simpson & Lorraine Munro. This course supports health and social care professionals to explore, identify and develop key skills for facilitating groups effectively. It will be an interdisciplinary event facilitated by Speech and Language Therapists, and includes Social Care Workers and Occupational Therapists. Working with attachment and trauma in a relational way has many inherent challenges – nowhere is this more prevalent and complex than in the field of health and social care. Carol Duffy has 20 years’ experience working in health and social care and 15 of those have been practicing as a child and adolescent psychotherapist specialising in play therapy.

Social Care Ireland are delighted to be back collaborating with the National Institute of Intellectual Disability Services (NIIDS) who are facilitating this 7 day programme. This will provide frontline staff with a framework for understanding and addressing the problems that arise when an individual has both intellectual disabilities, mental health difficulties and possibly a personality disorder. It provides staff with a range of creative strategies which they can use as effective approaches.

PETMA© is an Irish, human right based approach to supporting service users who may get verbally or physically distressed at times. PETMA© focuses on preventing service users from getting distressed, using intense modules to facilitate an understanding of the realities of having disabilities and how this impacts their ability to understand and comprehend information. The training focuses on stressors, triggers, functions and maintain factors. It provides training on de-escalation techniques such as understanding, empathy and collaboration. We have collaborated on similar events in the past that have been very successful. Sharing learning from different professions views has many advantages. (SFBT) is an effective, respectful, and powerful tool for workers in the health and social care field. SFBT focuses on client’s resources and skills, rather than on their deficits and weaknesses to help them to find solutions and create preferred futures rather than dwelling on past failures.

This collaboration between Social Care Ireland and the Irish Association of Social Work has successfully facilitated several interdisciplinary leadership workshops together. This year six professions from the professional development network identified leadership skills as a CPD need within their profession. Expanding these interdisciplinary Leadership workshops would be beneficial to share learning across a whole host of different leadership roles within the different sectors.
This is a bespoke workshop specifically for social care workers/leaders/managers that have some understanding of Social Role Valorisation. This workshop will focus in depth on some the key concept of choice. The belief that people with disability are capable of determining their own life choices – including where and with whom they live, how they support themselves and what they aspire to achieve – is relatively recent. Historically, services for people with disability had largely been premised on the belief that they needed to be segregated in institutions, away from mainstream community life.

The Mindfulness-based Health and Social Care (MBHSC) group programme is a unique mindfulness-based programme which focusses on improving the self-care and practice of health and social care professionals. MBHSC is a theory and evidence-informed programme which focusses on reducing stress, emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation of service users/patients, improving well-being and a range of practice skills and competencies.

Trauma is an umbrella and broad term, and we often focus in services around certain types of traumas; but the crucial area of intergenerational, multigenerational, transgenerational, inherited, and historical trauma is often less acknowledged or spoken about. This day has a spotlight on intergenerational trauma at a collective, community, and society level such as within the context of genocide, war, and political oppression. As well as exploring the concept and experience of intergenerational trauma within a family and parenting context.
